The Senate Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee voted to approve the nomination of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education by a party-line vote of 12 to 11. The full Senate is expected to vote this week on her nomination.

Coming to NSTA's 2017 Conference on Science Education, March 30–April 2? If so, don't miss the exhibit hall, where Horizon Educational will be hosting the Hydrogen Horizon Automotive Challenge (H2AC). NSTA and 100kin10 have developed a campaign designed to ensure that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and science/STEM teachers are a focus of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) at the state and local levels. National science groups, including NSTA, are hoping to convince South Dakota lawmakers to vote down a bill that would let teachers address strengths and weaknesses of scientific theories like evolution and climate change. 
On April 22—Earth Day—thousands of scientists will rally on behalf science. It took less than two weeks for the march to balloon into full-blown movement. But the effort has also sparked debates about whether scientists should be marching in the first place.
On February 3, the Texas State Board of Education gave preliminary approval to a biology curriculum for public high school students that  challenges the theory of evolution. Supporters have said that the theory of evolution can't readily explain certain scientific events while others say it invites creationism and intelligent design.
