Data Center Oversupply? China to Launch 10 ‘Data Zones’ in Aggressive AI Strategy |
China’s National Data Administration plans to launch 10 new “data pilot zones” in Beijing. The effort is part of a broader initiative to boost data transaction volumes and fuel AI-powered applications by 2026 and beyond. |

The move is poised to boost China’s massive $278 billion data sector and reinforce its ambitions as a global leader in AI. Yet the MIT Technology Review reports that up to 80% of China’s new data centers are unused or underutilized. That raises a tricky question: Are these enormous data expenditures smart investments…or just massive, expensive impulse buys? |

According to a fact sheet published by the White House, the EO aims to “strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity by focusing on critical protections against foreign cyber threats and enhancing secure technology practices.” Some of the key orders in the EO include: |
- Limiting cyberattack sanctions to foreign malicious actors
- Directing the federal government to promote secure software development
- Eliminating digital ID mandates for undocumented immigrants
- Repealing secure coding requirements for federal software vendors, calling them “unproven and burdensome”
- Shifting AI cybersecurity focus to vulnerability management over content control

Phishing Scam Sees £47 Million Stolen From UK’s Tax Office |
As if the word “taxes” wasn’t stressful enough. An organized crime group stole approximately £47 million ($64 million) from the United Kingdom’s tax office through fraudulent government claims, after compromising more than 100,000 user accounts. According to eSecurity Planet, citing His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the threat actors used stolen data—likely obtained via successful phishing attacks—to access or create fake tax accounts. From there, the criminals submitted phony tax claims and siphoned funds from HMRC. Fortunately, no individual taxpayers appear to have lost money as a result of the incident. However, the agency is urging the public to stay vigilant against suspicious texts, emails, or calls that claim to be from the UK tax office. Moral of the story? Verify all communications from government agencies. Check out this comprehensive guide to Cybersecurity Awareness training to ensure your company remains safe. |
OpenAI Appeals NYT Court Decision Requiring Retention of ChatGPT User Data |
OpenAI is appealing a May 13 court order from the Southern District of New York, which requires it to retain ChatGPT output log data indefinitely as part of an ongoing copyright case filed by The New York Times. CEO Sam Altman has criticized the order, stating that it “sets a bad precedent” in the world of large language models and AI. |

The case originated from a lawsuit filed by The New York Times against OpenAI in 2023, in which the newspaper alleged that the AI chatbot used its articles to train ChatGPT without permission. If upheld, the order would compel OpenAI to preserve all output log data, potentially supporting NYT’s copyright claims but also risking millions of unrelated user chats from being exposed until the case ends. Altman has pledged to fight the decision, emphasizing its threat to user privacy: “[We will] fight any demand that compromises our users’ privacy; this is a core principle.” |
