Yanko Design - Form Beyond Function |
Posted: 28 Mar 2017 12:07 PM PDT Rhythm plays a very crucial role in athletics. The rhythm of the heart almost becomes the rhythm at which joggers jog, cyclists and swimmers synchronize things with their breathing patterns. The Nike+ swimming goggles concept don’t just boost your performance by keeping the chlorine out of your eyes and giving you underwater vision. These goggles have within them headsets, that allow one to play music while swimming. Since the giggles/earphones are used underwater, they come with minimal controls and a water-proof design. A 2 directional pressure pad helps wearers skip forwards, backwards and play/pause tracks, while simple buttons allow volume toggling. Since most swimmers swim with earbuds to prevent water from entering their ear-canal, the Nike+ relies on bone-conducting technology to relay audio through the wearer’s skull directly to the inner-ear. Pretty neat, isn’t it? Plus, who wouldn’t fall in love with these?! The cobalt/cerulean color combo looks drop-dead cool! Designer: Aurélien Gravelotte |
Posted: 28 Mar 2017 10:16 AM PDT UPDATE: ONLY 24 HOURS LEFT! Folding chairs are usually a design exercise in functionality. Making sure your chair folds into something nice and slim, and opens out into a good, comfortable, fully functional chair. You’ll seldom find a single folding chair that is designed to look elegant in both it’s folded and unfolded avatars. Ollie’s the kind of foldable chair that you’d display grandly in your home, whether kept open, or closed. Its design is nothing like any foldable chair you’ve seen before, and truly so, since it comes from a design company known for their amazing kinetic sculptures! Made by RockPaperRobot (a truly inspiring woman-led company based out of Brooklyn), the Ollie takes inspiration from its surroundings. The chair has a unique folding design that makes it only 2 inches thin when folded, and looks like an innocuous piece of art. When opened out, it becomes a rather sturdy chair with built-in lumbar support, making it not just beautiful, but incredibly comfortable too. The chair’s construction uses Aluminum sheets and a beautiful looking flexible wooden tambour made out of Teak wood, making it great for both outdoors as well as indoors. Ollie’s magic is in the way it gracefully opens and closes. With a movement that seems almost like a magic trick, the chair opens out wonderfully and one simple string on the back can be pulled to close the chair back into its sheet avatar. In both closed as well as open formats, Ollie looks nothing short of a work of art. In fact, the tambour surface makes a great canvas for any artistic work, so you have yourself a chair when you need one, and a custom painting to proudly display when you’re done (instead of most flexible chairs that get stored in your closet). The Ollie is perfect for both homes as well as outdoors. Its wooden/metal aesthetic makes it go well with almost any decor, and trust me, you’ll be impressing your guests for a long time with its hypnotic folding/unfolding technique! A complete marvel of design and manufacturing… Or should we say ‘woman’ufacturing! Designers: Jessica Banks & Pete Schlebecker BUY IT HERE: $300.00 $450.00 |
Posted: 28 Mar 2017 09:00 AM PDT MEDevice is the latest trick up parents’ sleeves for getting kids to take their medicine! This clever design masks a medicine-filled syringe in a baby spoon so dosing can occur at the same time as little ones eat. Simply load up the syringe with the medicine and place it in the tube. Then, load up the spoon with a bite of food and when the child opens wide to eat, medicine can be released. It’s a little tricky, sure, but it makes the process less scary for kids and easier for parents! Designer: Donaldo Preciado |
Nintendo Switch from another time Posted: 28 Mar 2017 06:00 AM PDT Switch?? Is that you?? The Vega handheld entertainment device looks a lot like a conceptual Nintendo Switch from the past, or a gaming/immersive device from a Spike Jonze’s Her style future. Titled Potan, this modular unit comes with a tablet and a rig that allows one to slide in and out multiple modules ranging from joypads to touch-pads, to even numpads. The tablet in the center even comes with what I can only hope is a dual-camera on the back. Are we looking at the future of Augmented Reality gaming and entertainment?! Posted: 28 Mar 2017 03:00 AM PDT Trust me, you don’t even want to know what invisible things are lurking on the surface of your phone! Just think about all the things you touch in one day – money, door knobs, bathroom faucets – the list goes on. We wouldn’t rub our faces on any of these things, yet we have no problem touching our phone and then putting it to our ear! That’s where the Phone Sterilizer concept comes in. It will clean and disinfect your phone in a jiffy using UV light. Almost like a cryogenic pod or a vertical tanning bed for your smartphone, you simply have to place your device in the pill-shaped container and switch it on for a quick and easy detox! Posted: 28 Mar 2017 12:13 AM PDT Sea Cloud is a literal twist on pubic seating! It’s the latest artistic addition to the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. An abstraction of a birds-eye view of the sea as we fly over it, the form is composed of several twisted surfaces. Surprising yet playfully inviting, it’s at once a place for passersby to sit or lean for a bit of rest and a sculptural accent for travelers to admire. Zaha Hadid would be proud! Designer: Ken Chen |
Posted: 27 Mar 2017 02:56 PM PDT At a certain age, a child doesn’t need a toy that’s elaborately designed. Even the simplest things give them joy, which is what makes the Chou Du Volant such a delight for toddlers. Designed with a small footprint, and made primarily out of wood, the toy can be modified and customized to go from a rocking airplane, to leg-operated car, to a push-car. A customizable design means endless hours of fun for the child as they watch their toy transform from a mouse, to a hot-rod car, to an airplane. The wooden ply construction makes it incredibly easy for production too, with cost-effective processes like cutting, forming, and post-processing being the only techniques used in the production of the toy. Posted: 27 Mar 2017 01:00 PM PDT Let’s be honest. We miss the Electrolux Design Labs competition! It was the perfect platform for exploring uncharted technological territories and marrying that with a keen design sense. The Electrolux Evno is a conceptual wall mounted tankless water filter that brings a clean design to a product meant to clean our water. Aside from its pure aesthetic, it explores a new user experience, by bringing rotating faucet-style dispenser mechanisms to the product. While most water purifiers have push-button dispensers, or lever style dispensers, the Evno brings the universally relatable turn-on turn-off style dispenser to the appliance. The wall-mounted design even comes with a retractable tray, so that even though it may be mounted higher up so that bottles fit under the dispenser, the tray can hold smaller vessels like glasses or tumblers closer to the dispenser nozzle, preventing water from splashing out and getting wasted.
