Something Borrowed, Something New Posted: 12 Sep 2017 10:15 AM PDT AXYL is an all new collection from LAYER for the Allermuir brand, but it might look like something you’ve already seen before… and that’s precisely its appeal. Its a sophisticated combination of recognizable elements and strong geometries – like the A-frame typology and Mid-Century wrap-around shell. A new twist, however, is an entirely unique Y-frame, injection moulded shell designed to envelope the user, and optional cushion. The recycled aluminium in the Y-frame of the chairs uses just 5% of the energy required to create new aluminium and also offers significant cost savings. The chair shells, stool tops and café table tops are available in a variety of low-impact materials, including recycled wood fiber, reclaimed timber and recycled nylon, offering an efficient way of reusing waste products from the furniture industry. In ways I feel like we’ve pretty much documented the evolution of bags over the past couple of years. We’ve seen a lot of firsts, ranging from the world’s first couple of bags to have solar chargers and power banks, to the first slash-proof bag, to even bags that explored organizational grids like no one has ever seen before. The Moovy Bag marks the culmination of bag design by combining all the features we’ve seen in the past into one bag that feels like owning one product, but multiple solutions. I’d say the Moovy is only minimal in one aspect. Its aesthetic. Its feature list however tells a different story! The bag is made from the finest Italian Leather and Anti-Scratch Canvas, both of which are treated to be water repellent. Things get interesting when you open the Moovy to see what’s on the inside. Aside from storage for your laptop, the bag comes with a dedicated tablet-board that holds a tablet and stylus. The board is removable, and can be carried separately around your workplace, to boardrooms or for quick elevator pitches/approvals. Whatever else you may want to carry in the bag can be slipped into the bag’s own Organizer Board, a criss-cross mesh of elastic bands that allow you to segregate and hold all your items in any orientation you set, so that you don’t need to rummage through your bag to find your belongings. Aside from that, the bag has its own set of dedicated pockets that place themselves strategically for easy device charging, quick-access for keys or ID cards, to secure anti-theft passport storage. The bag even has its own 22000mAh battery that is more than capable of charging all your devices multiple times. To sweeten the deal, it even comes with mag-safe style cables for your phone, tablet, and laptop… a lot like what we saw with the X-Connect last year. This helps you store devices in their dedicated pockets and charge them in a snap, without having to fumble with cables and ports. The charging cable itself comes in the interchangeable 3-pronged design that everyone fell in love with last month! The Moovy comes in a regular as well as a solar variant. The solar variant puts an A4 sheet sized solar charger on the flap of the bag, allowing you to harness the sun’s power to charge the power bank on the inside along with the your devices. They claim that the panel can fully charge a smartphone in just 2 hours of exposure to sunlight. Anywhere but in the sweet spot results in, well, nothing… or absolute destruction! Particularly useful for those lacking experience, the Red Dot Design Concept Award winning Level Sander features a few technologic advancements to aid in the process. A LCD display shows a light spectrum in nine stages that indicates the level of force applied. Users can use it to gauge and compare if they are using too much or too little force. This makes the sanding work easier and reduces the chances of error. Better yet, its minimal interface is almost entirely free of buttons which makes it possible for users to hold it in a number of positions for comfort and to get the right sanding technique down. Holy F1! This AMG is A-M-AZING. Posted: 11 Sep 2017 11:05 PM PDT AMG just joined the hypercar party and it’s the life of it too! Meet Mercedes’ Project ONE… and before you ask, YES, it’s coming to life. Unveiled just today at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, it not only takes inspiration from the Benz F1 team, its guts are actually the same 1.6-liter V6 hybrid that’s led the brand to the 2017 F1 championship. It sports more than 1000 ponies and a top speed of more than 217 mph. That’s just… insane. As for looks, it’s the closest thing we’ve seen to the CLK-GTR (formerly my favorite Mercedes EVER) but it’s meaner, leaner, and a tad faster. It shares a similar roof scoop with the GTR but enhances it with an elongated shark fin down its rear, similar to those used in F1. Inside, driver and passenger will find themselves in cushy, infinitely adjusting, heating/cooling seats. SIKE. The inside is bare bones… but not quite as much as you’d expect. Surprisingly, it features large, dual digital displays, A/C, and a steering wheel akin that looks a little Nintendo-ish. Oh, and they’ll give you a dock for your smartphone but DON’T EVEN THINK about asking for anything else. 275 is the magic number. 275 units. And almost 2.75 million smackaroos. Worth it? It’s going to be one of the most extreme road cars ever and a technology tour de force. Perhaps. Designer: Mercedes-Benz For the first time, the two-seater supersports show car brings the very latest and efficient, fully-fledged Formula 1 hybrid technology from the race track to the road almost par for par to represent the highlight of AMG’s 50th anniversary. This high-performance hybrid is said to produce over 1,000 PS and reach top speeds beyond 350 km/h. The show car combines outstanding race track performance and day-to-day suitable Formula 1 hybrid technology with exemplary efficiency. This is a world first. One turbo engine and four electric motors. The high-performance plug-in hybrid drive system of the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE comes directly from Formula 1, and was realised in close cooperation with the motorsport experts of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth. It consists of a highly integrated and intelligently networked unit comprising one hybrid, turbocharged combustion engine with a total of four electric motors. One has been integrated into the turbocharger, another has been installed directly on the combustion engine with a link to the crankcase and the two remaining motors drive the front wheels. Read mid-engine with up to 11,000 rpm. The 1.6-litre V6 hybrid petrol engine with direct injection and electrically assisted single turbocharging comes directly from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car. To achieve high engine speeds, the mechanical valve springs have been replaced by pneumatic valve springs. The vehicle is mid-engined (ahead of the rear axle) and it can easily reach speeds of 11,000 rpm, which is currently unique for a roadgoing vehicle. However, for higher longevity and the use of commercially available Super Plus petrol instead of racing fuel, it remains significantly below the F1 engine speed limit. Ever since the early days of motorsport, engineers have dreamed of bringing motor racing technology to the road. Mercedes-AMG is now making this dream a reality at the very highest level. “Motorsport is not an end in itself for us. Faced with intense competition, we develop technologies from which our production vehicles also subsequently benefit. We are drawing on our experiences and successes from three constructors’ and drivers’ world championships to bring Formula 1 technology to the road for the first time: in Mercedes-AMG Project ONE”, says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. The concept car gives specific indications of what to expect from the upcoming production model. “The hypercar is the most ambitious project we have every undertaken. It marks yet another pinnacle of the successful, strategic development of Mercedes-AMG towards a performance and sports car brand. Project ONE raises the bar in terms of what is currently technologically feasible and thanks to its combination of efficiency and performance it represents an absolute benchmark. At the same time, Project ONE provides an outlook on how AMG will define driving performance in the future”, Tobias Moers explains as the Head of Management at Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The electric motors on the front axle are also true rev wonders, with rotor revolutions up to 50,000 rpm – current state of the art is a speed of 20,000 rpm. The very high-revving engine is additionally boosted by a high-tech turbocharger. The exhaust gas and compressor turbines are separated from one another and located at an optimum position to the exhaust side and to the intake side of the V6 engine, and connected to one another by a shaft. This shaft features an electric motor with approximately 90 kW which, depending on the operating status, electrically drives the compressor turbine with up to 100,000 rpm – for instance when moving off or following load changes. The Formula 1 designation for this unit is MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit Heat). Responds faster than a naturally aspirated V8 engine. The major advantage: the dreaded turbo lag – the delayed response to accelerator pedal commands owing to the inertia of the large charger – is completely eliminated. The response time is greatly reduced, and is even shorter than that of a naturally aspirated V8 engine. The electric turbocharger brings about another advantage: it uses parts of the surplus energy from the exhaust system to generate electricity, and either stores it in the high-voltage lithium-ion battery as part of recuperation or provides additional drive power by feeding it to an additional electric motor. This motor produces 120 kW, has been installed directly on the engine and features a link to the crankshaft via a spur gear (MGU-K = Motor Generator Unit Kinetic) – another technology that ensures maximum efficiency and performance in Formula 1. Fully electrically driven front axle. The thermal efficiency of the combustion engine with electric turbocharger (MGU-H) in conjunction with the electric motor on the crankshaft (MGU-K) will be over 40 percent. This is a previously unattained peak value for series production vehicles. There will also be two further 120 kW electric motors at the front axle. Each is connected to a front wheel via a reduction gear. The fully electrically driven front axle allows individual acceleration and braking of each front wheel, and therefore selective torque distribution for particularly high levels of vehicle dynamics. The driver can move off purely electrically, initially with just the electric motors on the front axle driving the hypercar and the electric motor on the crankshaft supporting short-term acceleration wishes. If the driver presses the accelerator more firmly and demands more output, the V6 engine also switches on. The drive system unfolds its full power as the engine speed increases. Impressive acceleration figures are possible with the Race Start function: acceleration from zero to 200 km/h takes under six seconds. If the driver’s foot leaves the accelerator again to let the car coast, the system switches to electric drive at the front axle – whilst braking under normal driving conditions recuperates up to 80 percent of the energy, which is fed into the battery. Automated 8-speed manual transmission. Power is transferred to the rear wheels by an 8-speed manual transmission that has been entirely developed from scratch for the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE. It is activated hydraulically and can be operated in automated mode or manually using the shift paddles. The car is equipped with an advanced, weight-optimised ceramic high-performance compound braking system. Its low weight reduces the unsprung masses, thus improving driving dynamics and agility. Innovative pushrod suspension. Multi-link designs are used at the front and rear. The adjustable coil-over suspension has several special features: Both push-rod spring struts have been installed across the direction of travel. The innovative arrangement of the spring/damper unit replaces the function and application of conventional tubular cross members. The overall setup of the springs and dampers is configured for perfectly balanced, easily controlled and above all sporty handling characteristics. These are also assisted by all-wheel drive and torque vectoring. |
Keeping your utensils high and dry! Posted: 11 Sep 2017 05:31 PM PDT Kohler is literally a household name. As in, not only is it a well-known brand, it makes great household items! Take for instance the Lift, Kohler’s answer to your wet-utensil related problems. The Lift was designed to take on all sorts of utensils, treating them differently, rather than having them all stashed and dripping away in the same container. The tray consists of an upward raising barrier that allows you to put large utensils like casseroles and saucepans in without having them falling out. The barrier can be collapsed for regular utensils like dishes that can easily be stacked in the grooves of the Lift. Lift also comes with a rather neat collapsible cutlery holder that opens up only when you need it, providing rather useful scenario-specific real-estate. The same goes for a collapsible rack that allows you to dry stemware (wine glasses) with ease, rather than having them lying around with plates and forks, gathering scratches while standing a chance of getting broken. Onnit’s range of Star Wars inspired exercise gear couldn’t be more ideal for that audience. Take for instance the kettlebells that come in rather realistic sculpted cast-iron, modeled using the heads of Darth Vader, The Imperial Stormtrooper, and Boba Fett. The idea behind using masked characters for the kettlebells not only makes for easier molding (imagine how annoyingly detailed a Chewbacca kettlebell would need to be), but also lends a certain gravitas and badass nature to the weights. The kettlebells also weigh in an increasing order of importance, with Boba Fett weighing in at 50 pounds, to the Stormtrooper being 60 pounds, and mister Vader weighing 70 pounds.
