When you look at a product that follows the rule of form follows function, you know immediately what it’s for. But some would argue that where’s the fun in that approach? I personally believe that form follows function limits your thinking to the most logical path… and the guys at X-Factor feel the same way too!

The Layered, at first glance, won’t give you even the slightest idea of what it is. So I’ll help you out. The Layered is a bluetooth speaker, with the equalizer turned into an interactive tactile element on the top. Taking bands of frequencies and dedicating different controls to them, the Layered contains six transparent discs lit from the bottom. These discs correspond to different frequency bands (calibrated to help control the presence of a particular instrument) and can be rolled up and down the Layered’s surface to work as an equalizer, allowing you to amplify or attenuate the effect of instruments in your music. The discs in no way hinder the functionality of the speaker, if anything, the Layered is much more engaging and functional than a regular speaker… So yes, sometimes it’s good for form to follow something other than pure function!

Bigger Magnets, Bigger Sound!

Always the ones to push boundaries, Advanced were the first to foresee the iPhone 7 disappearing headphone jack problem and in turn created the Accessport to not just allow users to plug headphones into mobiles without an audio jack, but also have them listen to their music with amplified greatness, hearing frequencies and notes that often died out because smartphones heavily downsample your music. Headphones (all speakers in general) are driven by diaphragms made to vibrate via magnets. The strength, nature, and design of the magnet helps add character to your audio. The GT-R headphones sport what’s known as a planar magnetic driver. Reserved for most high-end applications, planar magnetic drivers involve multiple magnets supporting a single diaphragm, resulting in a much more stable set-up that provides, simply put, better sound. While traditional dynamic driver headphones are much more commonplace, their economically viable nature results in trade-offs with regards to sound quality. Planar magnetic drivers are usually slightly on the heavier side, but the sound difference is said to be remarkedly better.

The GT-R headphones come with a design that gives comfort full priority. Designed to be the kind of headphones you would want to wear for long amounts of time, the plush earcups sit around your ear, muffling all external sound, while the self-adjusting suspended head-strap rests comfortably against your head, negating most of the weight of the headphones.

Pick-up or SUV, why choose just one?

Futuristic concepts cars appear to be mainly concerned with comfort and premium living spaces within the cabin, why not take that one step further. The Renault Subtil concept combines the typical SUV and Pick-Up design attributes while throwing in the adaptability of transitioning between the two. Ideal for families traveling and sightseeing, or couples’ excursions or even extreme sporting and adventures – the Renault Subtil is a luxuriously spacious concept packing both comfort and safety in every inch of this beauty.

The elevation of the Subtil is what gives the concept somewhat a form of pride and strength as it arcs above the road. Albeit; this idea is stunning, I can’t help but feel it doesn’t represent the design language and vision of Renault moving forward as seen with the Symbioz or the Trezor.
