Yanko Design - Form Beyond Function |
Posted: 14 Feb 2018 07:00 AM PST You could play Texas Hold’em on the internet via a website or an app, but there’s a different joy in being able to hold actual cards in your hand, in that fan orientation. There’s a different appeal to it because it’s MUCH more sensorial. You can see the cards, but you can also touch the cards, listen to the paper as the cards shuffle, probably smell them too. The fact that all your senses get engaged at the same time makes this vastly more appealing than just looking at a bunch of pixels on a screen. The premise behind The Apothecary was to champion print, using techniques that engage your senses, to create a pack of cards that are just beyond beautiful. With incredible hand-made illustrations, remarkable print quality, metal foiling, and even gilding the entire pack (the shimmering metallic colors on the edges of the cards), The Apothecary feels precious, and instantly becomes a keepsake or a memento, rather than any ordinary pack of cards. Even the outer packaging is a thing of true wonder as it uses thermochromic paint to change color when your finger touches it. The card-deck is designed to evoke a sense of mystery and fantasy, with its Ye Olde styling. Each card has hand-drawn illustrations that are then replicated in print, resulting in something that has a handcrafted appeal, but with finesse. The cards come in two styles (Sentiments and Virtues) and you can choose between the signature Black label and the color-changing White label. If you’re overly passionate about cardplaying, the cards even come in a hand-crafted ebony or red-oak cabinet case, adding another layer of mystique to remarkably pretty, multi-sensorial card-set that is The Apothecary. Posted: 14 Feb 2018 04:38 AM PST I’ve seen a lot of iron concepts come across my desk but this is probably the first with serious potential for taking it on the road. Unlike other steaming units with bulky handles and large water reservoirs, this one sports a removable handle that tucks away into a hollow space in the body for safekeeping while it’s being stored. The handle also doubles as key to ensure it isn’t misused by children or accidentally left on. It’s not quite flat pack, but in its compact form, it’s small enough to stuff in any suitcase corner or carryon. It’s easy to imagine anyone from traveling lawyers to jet-setting executives using this design! Designer: Muhammet Uzuntaş |
Posted: 13 Feb 2018 11:33 PM PST Inspired by his own frustration with having to run up and down the stairs to get an extra table when he had guests over, designer Marcus Voraa was determined to create a table that was flexible enough to accommodate groups of different size… and flexible it is! Called “@” for the shape it creates, this interactive furniture piece features a crank and loosely connected slats that can be rolled up or rolled out to save space or make room for more people! Simply extend the nesting legs on one side and “unwind” the top surface to extend the length of the table. When you’re finished using it, just wind it up with the steel crank and voila! All you have to worry about it where you’re going to store chairs. In beautiful beech wood with a beeswax finish, it’s a handsome statement piece that users will grow to love through unique interaction. Designer: Marcus Voraa |
This speaker/clock will leave you ‘starstruck’ Posted: 13 Feb 2018 04:00 PM PST Speaker, Clock, and a Constellation viewing device. Together they sound quite arbitrary, and if I told you they were all the same product, I’d get some weird looks for sure, but I assure you, they’re the most dreamy (and I use that adjective literally) combination ever. The Cosmos, now in its second iteration (there’s a video of version 1 above), combines clock and speaker, but that isn’t all. The clock face itself looks like a starry sky, with two of the largest stars telling you the time. The Cosmos pairs with an app that allows you to set the time as well as play music from the speakers. The square-shaped speaker/clock comes with two full range speakers and a passive woofer to deliver beautiful audio. The clock itself comprises two etched discs of clear acrylic (one with the hour, the other with the minute + constellation patterns) that light up around the edges thanks to an LED strip that sits around the clock’s periphery. The speaker and clock both sit behind a fine speaker grill that adds an element of awe to the clock. Light shines through the holes in the grill, making the stars in the constellation actually twinkle and shimmer. The result, you’ll have to admit, looks stunning. The Cosmos can either be kept on a tabletop, thanks to the kickstand, or even be wall-mounted. Either way, you’ll be staring at the stars all day long, while hopefully listening to some nice atmospheric jazz! Designer: Jay Kim |
Posted: 13 Feb 2018 02:00 PM PST I’ll refrain from referring to the Gourmia Tea Square as a Tea-urig, but that’s what it is. It’s the tea-drinker’s go to for instant tea pleasure. Designed to brew loose-leaf tea, the Tea Square takes those godawful tea-bags and shows them the door (because the only thing that should be in bags are your groceries, says Chef Daniel Green). The Tea Square stores your water and tea leaves in separate compartments and with just a few button pushes, puts together the perfect cup of tea for you. Taking care of everything from water temperature, to steeping time, to even pouring the tea into the carafe only when it knows the carafe has been docked, the Tea Square automates process that’s known for being quite human-centric. With the ability (abili-tea?) to brew all sorts of tea variants (and even coffee), the Tea Square is compact and takes the hassle out of brewing because sometimes all you want is to have a cup of tea in your hands without having to make it!
