Security, charging and music in one! Posted: 06 Apr 2018 11:00 AM PDT The S-Cradle is a perplexing design that transforms your phone into a reliable security system for 24/7 monitoring. It serves as both a watchdog, charger and Bluetooth speaker for streaming your favorite tunes. The unit itself doesn’t appear to have an integrated camera, so it’s not immediately clear whether or not your phone has to be cradled to monitor with video. Then again, wouldn’t you need your smartphone in-hand to actually monitor what’s going on remotely? While that issue seems to need a bit of tweaking, it’s also equipped with smoke sensors and a motion detector so you can stay alert even without video! Designer: Heewoong Chai |
Posted: 06 Apr 2018 10:50 AM PDT Robot vacuums have come a long way but the AIRBOT takes things to a whole new vertical… literally! The hybrid design includes an autonomous floor vacuum in addition to an air purifier. Since it will be scanning every inch of your apartment anyway, it only makes sense that the floor vacuum detects the indoor air quality from room to room. Once it has scanned the areas for free radicals, pollutants and other harmful particles, it will zoom on over to the air purifier, pick it up and give it a lift to the area needing the most purification! It’s not only a more comprehensive indoor hygiene solution but an adorable tech team working in tandem! Designer: Heewoong Chai |
Posted: 06 Apr 2018 09:30 AM PDT Designed to be much more than your run-of-the-mill shelving unit, GATE uses moveable wooden bars that are placed on a metal rod to create a striking and dynamic structure. GATE’s designer identified that a shelving unit only occasionally holds the same items for its entire life, more often than not the items will be swapped out over time and the environment that it is placed in will change, therefore the product needs to be able to adapt to this. Being able to choose where you want the shelves to be positioned is just the beginning! The ‘zones’ allow for the unit to be used as a wardrobe, storage for wine glasses, shoe shelving or even a small desk! This level of adaptability makes GATE perfect for use in the home as well as commercial environments such as bars and restaurants. I know I want one! Designer: Artem Zakharchenko |
Posted: 06 Apr 2018 05:57 AM PDT Relying on the methodical movement of the seconds hand, the Humism converts that functional cyclical motion into something more aesthetic, more alluring, more amazing. Inspired by the kinetic art movement of the 50s, the Humism watch rejects the idea that time should be about numbers and measuring units, but rather of movement, because time as an entity keeps moving. With a 316L surgical-grade steel body, a sapphire crystal on the front and back, and a Japanese Automatic Seiko NH35A movement on the inside, the watch has some undeniably impressive specs, but none as impressive as the revolving detail on the front. The hour and minute hands present themselves as a blocked and an outlined circle around the edge, but what’s truly hypnotic is the seconds dial, a “vanishingly thin” laser cut dial with a design detail that makes one revolution every 60 seconds. Behind it is a static dial with a mirror image of the second dial’s artwork. When the dynamic dial spins against the static disc, it creates some remarkable psychedelic patterns that you’ll probably spend more time looking at than the actual time. But then again… that’s the point. To enjoy time’s movement rather than to be bound by it! Designer: Humism |
Make Dehumidifying a Celestial Event Posted: 06 Apr 2018 12:00 AM PDT When you imagine appliances like a dehumidifier, this is the last thing you’d expect it to look like… and that’s precisely its appeal! This sleek, minimalistic, wall-mounted object is a far cry from the bulky, cumbersome units of yesteryear. Inspired by lunar and solar eclipses, it features an integrated LED system that creates an artistic pattern of shadow and light shapes that are not only pleasing to the eye but indicatory of the appliance’s working status. Spin the simplistic interface to turn it on and the backlight will activate to show that it’s working. An artful accent in the modern abode, it’s right at home on any wall, in any room. Posted: 05 Apr 2018 05:00 PM PDT Victorinox’s I.N.O.X. watch was made to be as hardy and as unbeatable as the Swiss Army company’s most famous offering… the Swiss Army Knife. The I.N.O.X. Carbon Limited Edition comes with a design very fitting for Victorinox. A chiseled, rugged body and a woven paracord strap give the watch a touch persona, only to be reinforced by the fact that the watch is actually crafted from carbon that’s 50% lighter and five times more resistant than steel. According to Victorinox, this is the only Swiss watch to withstand 130 extreme endurance homologation tests, including a space-test. The design makes use of a bright orange that isn’t only reminiscent of the NASA space suits and the exceptional engineering of the Golden Gate Bridge, but also the color used to prevent danger and keep you safe. Additionally, the watch also comes with an extra protective bumper that has its own inbuilt USB flashlight, making it the perfect combination of high-performance engineering, Swiss precision, and an adventure-ready outlook! This roomba-sized robot can paint on walls! Posted: 05 Apr 2018 03:11 PM PDT Carlo Ratti’s Scribit is a small printer with big ambitions and the ability to take on the biggest canvases possible. Scribit is a robot that allows users to draw on walls, whiteboards, pieces of glass, or plastered drywall. Suspending itself from the uppermost corners, the Scribit can pretty accurately track coordinates (like a delta 3D printer, but without the Z axis) and create artworks on massive walls using the CMYK markers within its design. Using whiteboard markers to create complex artworks, the artworks can also be erased and replaced with new ones from time to time, allowing massive walls to turn into dynamic canvases for art, information, or advertisement. “We are totally deluged with information, and spend too much of our non-sleeping time in front of one form or another of digital screen – TV, desktop computer, laptop, tablet or phone. Do we really want to add more screens to our lives?” says Ratti, founding partner of CRA and director of the MIT Senseable City Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): “Scribit offers up an alternative: a robotic system that draws on any kind of vertical surface, following a primordial act performed by humanity since our first cave graffiti.” Readers in Milan, get ready to see the Scribit first hand at the Milan Design Week! The holy trinity of leather EDC Posted: 05 Apr 2018 01:11 PM PDT Wallet, case, and stand, the Capra Leather iPhone Wallet Case is all of them! Using a clever design that relies on the bifold nature of the wallet case, and leather’s stiffness, the Capra Case transforms from a cover for your iPhone to a stand for it, working in both landscape and portrait formats, and looking absolutely dapper while it does. The case comes made from full grain leather, and can store your iPhone along with either cash, cards, or iPhone accessories like cables, dongles, or your airpods. Use it as a carrying case/wallet when you need, and transform it instantly to a stand by having the iPhone resting against the case’s front, held in place by a leather lip within the case. Each case is hand-made and made to order. Available in Green, Black, Tobacco Brown, and Grey, the cases come in sizes that fit all the latest generation iPhones (from 6 to X) and can even be custom engraved with a personal or company name!
