My parents celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary earlier this month. I’ve seen pictures of their wedding day. My mom wore one dress -- for the whole day. There was no wardrobe change between the ceremony and reception. They didn’t have a dozen wedding attendants, Escalade limousines or live doves. Their wedding was simple and sweet, with just a few family and friends present. I was watching an interview Oprah Winfrey did with former First Lady Michelle Obama, during which they discussed marriage. Mrs. Obama talked about how young people don’t fully understand the reality of marriage; they’re focused more on the fun of the wedding. I loved Oprah’s response: “Yeah, what you want is big anniversaries.” I thought of Mom and Dad when she said that. For them, 53 years IS the prize. Fifty-three years, three kids, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three dogs, no cats, one rabbit, one sheep and one rat. They know the rigors of marriage and embrace it -- not as drudgery, but as a blessing. To have each other, confidently, is their richness. And they’ll tell you it wasn’t magic. It was day after day, month after month, year after year, choosing each other. Commitment. My parents’ marriage is successful because they honor the institution. They commit to it. They take it seriously and show up every day (every day!) to do it well. Work is much the same, isn’t it? True professionals honor their craft. We take it seriously. We take our employers seriously. We know the journey -- showing up on time, collaborating with colleagues, exercising creativity -- is just as important as the destination, as the outcome. And we commit to that entire process. Yesterday’s column hit home with many of you; I received several notes about it. Folks weren’t bashing GenZers and millennials. Rather, they talked about how they benefited from committing to their work and employers -- fulfilling the requirements of the job. They grew their skillset, gained toughness and wisdom, and earned the respect of their peers. Commitment made them better professionals. May we all live that in our work. How can I serve you better with this brief? Let me know! And if you enjoy this brief, tell others so they can benefit also.
