The Current Plus: Alexa’s political opinions, drone finds a lost toddler, $10K in free advertising In partnership with Oracle NetSuite | Whoa, baby, it’s Thursday! Let’s kick things off with trivia. Which word is most frequently corrected for typos by Microsoft Word's spell checker? Is it … A.) Accommodate, B.) Definitely, C.) Separate or D.) Receive? Answer’s at the end. 🤦🏼♀️ S.S. in San Francisco clicked on an Amazon deal in yesterday’s newsletter, found a different price listed and wrote to me: “Kim, are you hoping that your suckers will buy one anyways so you make a bigger cut?” Of course not. I can’t predict when an Amazon sale will end. Every now and then, the prices go up after I hit send. I’d never do that to any one of you on purpose. Now, on to the news! — Kim 📫 First-time reader? TODAY'S TOP STORY 5-minute phone privacy check We've all got a load of sensitive info on our phones — texts with loved ones, banking details, passwords and family photos. You don't want anyone snooping around, whether it's an app maker on the other side of the world or the guy sitting behind you at the coffee shop. Take five minutes to run this privacy audit, and then pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Check your permissions Apps request permissions, and the most important are your phone's location, camera and microphone. Any apps you give access to these had better be ones you trust. To check: Apple iPhone: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security, then Location Services, Camera or Microphone. Google Pixel: Open Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy controls > Permission manager. Samsung Galaxy: Head to Settings > Security and privacy > Permission manager. Lock down everything Your lock screen is an effective barrier to keep others out, and everyone should use one. PIN, fingerprint, your face — whatever you prefer is better than nothing. Apple iPhone: Set this up via Face ID & Passcode. Google Pixel: Head to Settings > Security and privacy > Device lock. Samsung Galaxy: Under Settings, look for Lock screen and AOD. You’ll also want your phone to lock as soon as possible when you're not using it. Apple iPhone: Under Settings, choose Display & Brightness > Auto‑Lock. Google Pixel: Head to Settings > Display and touch > Screen timeout. Samsung Galaxy: From your settings, tap Display > Screen timeout. Keep out strangers The short-range transfer tech built into iOS and Android is super handy when you need to share something with a friend or relative. But what if you don't want strangers pinging you with unwanted photos, videos and other files? Apple iPhone: Your device uses AirDrop for these types of transfers. Limit it to contacts only or turn it off altogether via Settings > General > AirDrop. Android devices: The transfer tool here is called Quick Share. On a Pixel, you’ll find the sharing prefs under Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Quick Share. On a Galaxy, it’s under Settings > Connected devices > Quick Share. Browse the web Open your phone’s browser and say hello to instant tracking — unless you do something about it. Put limits on this on your iPhone by opening Settings > Apps and tapping on Safari. Under the app’s settings, scroll to Privacy & Security and toggle on the option for Prevent Cross-Site Tracking. For Chrome on Android, open the browser and tap the three dots (top right). From there, hit Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies and turn on Block third-party cookies. ❤️🩹 All pretty painless, right? Now, do your friends and family a favor and share this important intel with them using the icons below. |
DEALS OF THE DAY Three things to keep tabs on YOU No one else will do it better than you. On the level: Check your blood oxygen levels, pulse rate and pulse strength with this fingertip monitor. This is especially useful when you have a respiratory infection and are wondering when to call a doc or go to the ER. Cuff me: It’s important to monitor your blood pressure at home. This model connects to your phone via Bluetooth to store your readings, plus it's a bargain at 44% off ($27.99). Tip the scale: See your weight displayed digitally in big numbers on this smart scale, or head to its app to see your weight and 12 other metrics, including your BMI. Right now, it’s 43% off ($19.99). |
WEB WATERCOOLER 🚨 Alexa wants you to vote a certain way: When asked why you should vote for Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Amazon Alexa said, “I cannot provide content that promotes a specific political party or a specific candidate.” But for Kamala Harris, it returned a list of answers, including, “While there are many reasons to vote for Kamala Harris, the most significant may be that she is a female of color with a comprehensive plan to address racial injustice and inequality throughout the country.” Amazon says it was a glitch and they’ve since fixed it. Makes you wonder where else Big Tech is spewing their employees’ opinions. Chinese health warning: Shein and Temu are under investigation for selling deadly products meant for babies and toddlers. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission says both retailers “raise specific concerns” about quality control. This is your warning: Do not buy any baby clothes or toys from these retailers. 🧒🏼 Thank goodness for drones: A 3-year-old boy went missing in a 100-acre cornfield in Wisconsin. As night fell, deputies turned to a thermal imaging drone to spot the toddler’s body heat. The drone found him about half a mile from home. The reason for his adventure? He was chasing a cat. Forced advertising: Soon, you’ll see ads on Snapchat next to messages from your friends. Sponsored snaps will show as unread messages in the main chat tab, but they won’t trigger push notifications, at least. Snap’s stock price is hovering near an all-time low. This is def not a coincidence. 📉 Historic crash: On Tuesday, AI chipmaker NVIDIA’s stock tanked 9.5%, wiping out $279 billion of the company's value. Wow! That’s the biggest single-day loss ever for a U.S. company. For perspective, only 27 companies worldwide are worth as much as NVIDIA lost. Investors are worried about AI and the U.S. economy. NVIDIA has denied reports it received a subpoena from the DOJ over antitrust concerns. 📝 Keeping up with the Kontracts: Kim Kardashian’s 8-year-old son, Saint, is starting his own YouTube channel, but only after signing a contract. Some of the terms? No recording while big sister North is making music, show Mom all videos before posting, and Mom can delete the account or make it private if he breaks the rules. Love the idea? I’ve got my own Kids’ Tech Contract you can use with a little one in your life. |

For years, I’ve recommended LibreOffice, the free, open-source office software suite. It works on Windows, Mac and Linux. Big deal alert! Raycon earbuds are on sale right now. On Windows, press Ctrl + Home to jump to the beginning or Ctrl + End to jump to the end. On a Mac, it’s Cmd + Home and Cmd + End. Call me, maybe: Do Not Disturb mode is fantastic, but what if you want someone to be able to reach you even if it’s enabled? Set them up as an approved contact. I did this with both Ian and Barry. |

BY THE NUMBERS 53% of businesses Have been targeted by a financial deepfake scam. Even worse, 43% fell for it. These scams use bogus images, videos or audio recordings to convince people to buy gift cards, wire money or otherwise spend. If you get a random financial request at work, reach out to the person directly to confirm. 76% of patients Got a price break on a medical bill. How? Picking up the phone. You may assume it’s not worth the time, but new research shows disputing an error or simply asking for reduced pricing goes a long way. My advice: Be polite and firm. 1,000 pieces of content Available on each Delta flight. That includes 300 movies. A six-person team swaps 20% to 25% of the lineup every 30 days so frequent fliers don’t get bored. Honestly, I don’t think airplane jokes are funny; they’re just really Boeing. |
TECH TIDBIT See that suitcase in the image? Using Google Lens, you can get info about it right there in your tab. So handy! Open the Chrome menu > Search with Google Lens. Click and drag anywhere on the page to search for an image. Voila! |
UNTIL NEXT TIME ... The answer: A.) Accommodate. When you say it aloud, it might not sound like it’s spelled with two M's and two C's. That can lead you astray when you're trying to spell it. Words that always stump me: Judgment (argh, I want another E in there) and cemetery (that last E should totally be an A). 🤣 So what if I can’t spell “Armmagedon?” It’s not the end of the world. (Hahaha!) That’s a wrap. Back in your inbox tomorrow with a scary but important warning. Sextortion scams are getting worse, and criminals have a new way to fool you into paying. You don’t want to miss it! I hope you have a great rest of your day! — Kim |
