| Sometimes someone will start following me, and I’ll check out their bio, and I think to myself, “You’re not going to like it here.” Most people find me too honest or too, I don’t know… brutal? Some people like my honesty though. In fact, just this week I heard from a few people thanking me for my courage to speak truth because it’s inspired them to do the same. One said, “But I’m scared.” I responded, “Oh… I’m scared every day. Courage is actually just fear getting back in the saddle.” She responded, “Just showing up!” Yep. That’s courage. Just showing up. Opening your mouth and speaking truth. Or, in my case, drawing that cartoon and posting it. Like Palahniuk implies, when you speak and act in a way that is memorable, you might do it at the cost of being disliked. In fact, just a couple of years ago my daughter Casile gave me the book, “The Courage to be Disliked” by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. It’s all there! I know. I know. I know. We want to be remembered AND liked. But apparently you can’t have both. Or, actually, you can be remembered and liked by some, but not all. I think that’s more accurate. Better to do the right thing, be remembered, and loved by the few. I’m good with that. Are you? |
