| | Southeast Minnesota struggles for common ground on nitrate pollution as health worries rise | Nitrate — formed when nitrogen mixes with oxygen in water — is colorless, odorless and tasteless, and can easily go undetected if water isn’t tested, especially in old wells installed prior to current codes. Nitrogen is a common component of commercial fertilizer and animal manure used on crop land, and can leach into the groundwater. In a petition filed in April, environmental groups asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to use its emergency powers under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act to intervene in what they call an “imminent and substantial endangerment to human health.” | |

| Minneapolis musician Mike Kota on her writing process and new crowd-funded EP. Minneapolis singer-songwriter Mike Kota has had an exciting year that started back in January when she was featured in First Avenue’s Best New Bands of 2022 concert. This past spring and summer, she opened for Hozier and Shakey Graves. Kota’s new EP, Turning a Corner, comes out Nov. 13. Worldwide, women cook twice as much as men: One country bucks the trend. A new gallop survey finds the gender gap in home cooking has widened. Globally, women cook an average of nine meals per week, compared to four meals for men. But what country goes against the grain? How extreme weather in the US may have affected the pumpkins you picked this year for Halloween. Some pumpkin farmers in the West, particularly wholesalers in places like Colorado and New Mexico, are feeling the pinching effects of drought. Farmers have had to rely on dwindling water for irrigation while battling wacky weather to get their crops planted on time. New Hampshire's primary ballots will have 24 Republicans and 21 Democrats, but no Biden.
