| | How rethinking design could reduce the need for road salt | The biggest source of chloride pollution is road salt used to melt ice on streets, sidewalks and parking lots. There’s a movement to rethink how those places are built to reduce the need for so much salt. Eden Prairie is one of several Minnesota cities testing low-salt design. The concept is to plan streets and buildings so ice and melted snow don’t accumulate in places where people walk and drive. Other pilot cities are Bloomington, Minnetonka, Hopkins and Richfield. | |

| | USA Hockey will now require neck protectors for its youth leagues in wake of Adam Johnson’s death | USA Hockey, which oversees hundreds of youth hockey leagues across the country, will require neck protectors for all of its players starting in August. The decision, which was announced Monday, comes after the death of Adam Johnson. Johnson, a Minnesota native, died after an on-ice collision during a hockey game in Sheffield, England in late October. Johnson was cut by a skate blade on his neck and later died from his injuries. | |

Minneapolis Uber, Lyft drivers gather to push for higher pay. Minnesota Uber/Lyft Drivers Association President Eid Ali says compensation should meet or exceed Minneapolis’s large employer minimum wage of $15.57. Police evict people from relocated Camp Nenookaasi, residents say they had little notice. Minneapolis Operations Director Margaret Anderson Kelliher said the city will not permit another large encampment from forming. She said it will cite anyone who returns to the site for trespassing and is working with community partners to find shelter and housing placements for residents. Paddle planning: BWCA permit reservations open Wednesday. Anyone planning an overnight trip into the BWCA between May 1 and Sept. 30 —whether it’s in a canoe, motorboat or on foot along hiking trails — is required to obtain a quota permit.
