I do enjoy some lateral thinking when it comes to problem solving, so fair play to the Dutch Grand Prix for its new ‘fake gravel’ approach to the Turn 12 chicane. With a return to gravel traps being very much in vogue, and sausage kerbs being yesterday’s news on safety grounds, enforcing track limits has taken on a new approach here. A bit like we’ve seen with astroturf at other tracks – which creates its own problem if it gets torn-up – having a lower-grip surface, to dissuade drivers from using it, it exactly what’s needed. Unless it’s abused, of course… Recall the mess that was previously made here, if drivers went briefly off-line through the gravel and dragged it back on to the racing surface, it seems a neat solution to reduce the threat of red flags or safety cars. Will it work as intended? We’ll find out this weekend! By: Charles Bradley, Global Editor in Chief Motorsport.com |
