Zucchini and Beyond: A Farmers Market Guide to Summer Squash

It’s officially summer, which means the explosion of summer squash at the farmers market is just beginning. More than just the common zucchini, summer squash varieties come in different shapes, sizes, and shades of yellow and green, some of which you can only find at the farmers market.

As we enter summer squash season, we’ve collected some common types you’ll cross paths with at the farmers market, along with some flavorful and creative ways to prepare them.

Kory Cogdill (shown, left, with his partner Korey Reynolds) supports Foodwise on our Events Committee for events like Summer Bash. He says that the most rewarding part of volunteering is "the community I have found through Foodwise in all different ways—socially, professionally, and the resources around the Bay Area."

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market: Featured Vendors

Popping up with Mandela Partners in July, visit K.I.S. (Keep It Simple) in the back plaza on Saturdays for organic, fresh pressed juice and ginger shots.

Stop by Lonely Mountain Farm's stand on Saturdays for certified organic sunflowers, cranberry beans, and cucumbers, plus their dilly pickles.

Mission Community Market: Featured Vendors

Once a month, visit the Foodwise Education Station from 3 to 6 pm for free family activities. This Thursday, play a produce seasonality game.

From his farm in Byron, farmer Michael Arata brings a bounty of figs and stone fruit to the Mission on Thursdays and to the Ferry Plaza on Saturdays.
