| rantnrave:// I truly appreciate that voices in the fashion industry have come out for issues like diversity and education, because it shows that in culture and society, what we wear—and how we share what we wear—is always implicated. People sometimes take the stance that fashion criticism doesn’t exist, and yet there are voices out there asking "why?" even if it's not the type of criticism in place for fields such as art or photography. Creativity is the best weapon. Here’s some of what’s been at issue in headlines from the past 24 hours: angry Americans, an aggregate of fashion magazine covers, legal developments, student admissions, and KANYE. Oh and Kanye. Here's hoping for sustained coverage of individuals who subvert our criticism… I’m not really into predictions (hopefully the reasons are obvious) but there are some things to maybe *not* sleep on for 2017. This GRAND THEFT AUTO expansion pack lets you dress your character in streetwear clearly modeled after brands like SUPREME and PALACE (look at the prices). Don’t sleep on this, fashion. Garments and accessories are already in digital environments, and no one wants a naked avatar. Check that. Some people might. I’m wondering which luxury #megabrand will seriously get into the game first. Especially given that the fashion industry largely slept on this thing called “e-commerce” in the late 90s/early 2000s. Note to all fashion designers: start working on your UNITY skillz… Also, for 2017, don’t sleep on MINNESOTA. Or COLUMBUS, OHIO. Those places may not have spawned the next VETEMENTS, but there’s definitely something up in the middle west of the USA… GOOGLE released its top searches for fashion and spread the news to screens far and wide. So. Many. Headlines about it. My favorite was ELIZA BROOKE’s. Read that one, and ask yourself if the question “How to dress like a hippie?” is actionable for your business. j/k, j/k… Perfume intensity is on the rise amongst certain brands (wondering if this is true for all markets, since in some places, wearing perfume is considered rude)…And finally, designer SEULKI SUE LEE explores concepts of the body in fashion. I respect her honesty when it comes to the “ideal” body in fashion: "I was able to challenge my own perception of beauty as a fashion designer since – as much as I hate to admit it – I’m also attracted to the conventional ideas of beauty in the fashion industry." | | - HK Mindy Meissen, curator |
