More than 50 sick, injured pelicans rescued By Heather McRea | This week in Coast Lines: The Los Angeles Wildlife Center in San Pedro has been swamped this week with sick and injured brown pelicans. Plus, the California Coastal Commission says no to a proposed water desalination plant in Huntington Beach, and Southern California’s traditional fire season isn’t so traditional anymore. | Birds in trouble Brown pelicans seem to be struggling to find food, venturing into more risky areas to forage, and now they are showing up in flocks injured or sick at the Los Angeles Wildlife Center. “We’re seeing a mix of fledglings, second-year birds and mature adults,” said Dr. Rebecca Duerr, director of research and veterinary science for the Bird Rescue’s center in San Pedro, “which makes me think it could be a food supply issue rather than a simple influx of starving fledglings.” This isn’t the first time the rescue center has seen this. Water works The California Coastal Commission has rejected Poseidon Water’s request for permits needed to build a desalination plant in Huntington Beach. The decision pretty much ends the biggest ocean-to-tap proposal in the county. But the commissioners didn’t close the door on using ocean water to fill drinking glasses in the future. | Coastal fire The Coastal fire that destroyed 20 homes overlooking the ocean in Orange County has been contained, but among its lasting impacts is evidence we need to prepare for damaging wildfires beyond the traditional season. “Each new year of the 21st century has been a record-breaker in terms of wildfire damage in California,” said Tirtha Banerjee, a professor of civil & environmental engineering at UCI and co-author of a recent study on fires. The UCI report also backed up the idea that the fire season is what the Coastal fire suggests it is – year-round and more intense. Read the story. |
