In today's newsletter, a Democrat will represent Grand Rapids for the first time since 1977, a full look at numbers from yesterday's election and an upcoming temperature drop could bring lake effect snow to Michigan. |
It was a smooth election, officials say, despite a huge turnout. |
As voters filled polling places yesterday, the state announced turnout was higher than anticipated. In some places, students stood in hours-long lines to participate in same-day registration and residents remained in line after poll-closing time, sticking around to cast a ballot. But despite the high number of participants, everything went according to plan, according to Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. There were a few individual hiccups, though. In Flint, an allegedly intoxicated poll worker was arrested for making threats. And Detroit officials were on high alert for issues surrounding calls for protests. The relatively smooth day appeared to stretch beyond our state and across the country. Hopefully your Election Day was a peaceful one. And the same wish is extended for today.

A warm November with a drastic cold-snap could bring December-like lake effect snow. |
A big change is coming: The first ingredient needed for lake-effect snow is a large temperature difference between the surface water temperatures and air temperatures around 5,000 feet up. A dramatic drop in temperature, like the one that is coming later this week, can provide just the right conditions. Record warmth? Yeah, that's what I want to talk about. Thursday and Friday have the potential to be record-breaking when it comes to high temperatures. Still have leaves to rake? It might be the perfect time! (Or you can just leave them there. It's the new trend.)
Skywatching tips: We are hoping for clear skies so we can use these stellar November stargazing tips. Need an exciting reason to head outside once it gets colder? Here you go! |
